Molecular mechanisms of EV-associated DAMPs-mediated neuroinflammation

A study led by Carla Lopes at the University of Coimbra investigated the role of extracellular vesicle-associated mitochondrial Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (mtDAMPs) in promoting early inflammation in neurodegenerative disorders.

The paper highlighted how dysfunctional mitochondria release mtDAMPs via mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs), triggering neuroinflammation and contributing to neuronal death. 

These findings underscore potential strategies for intervening in microglia-driven cerebral inflammation to delay disease onset, which she will present at Targeting EVs 2024.
